Can I install a ZuBar mild steel balustrade myself?

Yes. ZuBar is designed for installation by competent builders, self-builders, and experienced DIYers without the need for specialist fabrication equipment on site. Each post arrives with a pre-drilled and tapped fixing plate. Infill panels bolt directly to the post using the supplied socket button security screws and nylon spacers. Does ZuBar comply with UK Building Regulations?

Yes. ZuBar is engineered and tested to BS 6180, the British Standard for barriers in and about buildings, and all steel fabrication is UKCA/CE marked to BS EN 1090-2:2018 (EXC2).

The infill bar spacing is held at a maximum 99mm clear gap, meeting the requirement under Approved Document K. For domestic applications, the system is specified to 0.74kN loading; for commercial applications, 1.5kN.

If you are unsure which load category your project falls under, your Building Control surveyor can confirm this before you order.

Can ZuBar be used on a staircase?

Yes. ZuBar is designed and fabricated to follow any stair flight angle. We use purpose-built jigs to hold the post angle accurately to your pitch, which keeps the installation consistent and reduces cost compared with a one-off commission.

The circular tube handrail runs continuously along the posts and is seated at the correct height above the pitch line as required by Approved Document K.

Handrail inline connectors, 90-degree corner connectors, and end caps are all available to buy separately for a complete staircase finish.

What is the difference between top mounted and side mounted ZuBar posts?

Top mounted (base fix) means the post base plate is fixed to the top surface of your floor, deck, or structural slab. Side mounted (side fix or fascia fix) means the base plate is fixed to the vertical face of the structure, such as a balcony fascia, rim joist, or steel edge beam. Both configurations use the same post.

The fixing method you choose depends on what your substrate allows and where your finished floor level sits. If you are unsure which suits your build, contact us before ordering and we can advise.

What finishes are available on ZuBar?

How do I work out how many posts and infill panels I need?

Measure your total run length in millimetres from the centre of your first post position to the centre of your last. Divide that by your chosen bay width to find the number of infill panels required. Add one post per bay plus one additional end post for the full run. For staircase runs, also account for the top and bottom newel positions. Use the Calculate Your Kit Cost tool on each product page, or contact us and we will work through the quantities with you.

A Mild Steel Balustrade Designed to Self-Build

ZuBar is built around a 50mm square box section post with a 12mm thick fully welded base plate. The sides are drilled and tapped, so infill panels bolt directly to the post using socket button security screws and nylon spacers. No specialist tooling. No fabricator on site.

Infill panels use a flat bar outer frame with 12mm square vertical bars at a maximum 99mm clear spacing, meeting the infill requirement under UK Building Regulations Approved Document K. Standard rectangular panels cover straight runs. Corner panels handle 90-degree direction changes. The 42.4mm circular tube handrail runs in 3.0m sections with internal knock-in connectors for flush joints throughout.

ZuBar posts are available top mounted (base fix) for decks, floors, and slabs, or side mounted (side fix) for balcony fascias and rim joists. For staircase runs, our purpose-built fabrication jigs hold the post angle accurately to your stair flight pitch, keeping the installation straight and the end cost controlled.

Two Fixing Configurations, One System

Top mounted (base fix): The base plate sits flat to the finished floor level and anchors directly to the top surface of your deck, slab, or structural floor. This is the standard configuration for terraces, balconies, and mezzanine guardrails.

Side mounted (side fix): Where the top of the structure is not accessible, the base plate fixes to the vertical face of the fascia, rim joist, or edge beam. Both configurations use the same post.

ZuBar is specified to 0.74kN for domestic applications and 1.5kN for commercial. If your project falls under CDM regulations, ZuBar carries UKCA/CE marking to BS EN 1090-2:2018 (EXC2), and we hold active Constructionline and CHAS accreditations.
